Sandy Lendrum, the Advanced Practice Nurse at Directions Health Services is the driving force behind Directions Health’s Teen Clinic initiative. This clinic, under Sandy’s leadership, extends its services beyond traditional healthcare settings, actively reaching out to marginalised, geographically isolated, and disadvantaged young people. Teen clinic offers free health services, addressing the significant accessibility barriers faced by these youth populations.

Sandy’s role includes working alongside youth workers in community, school wellbeing teams and young people to promote and expand accessibility to holistic healthcare to ensure the best outcomes for young people.

Sandy’s work in delivering Teen Clinic at YWCA Canberra’s Mura Lanyon Youth and Community Centre has transformed the lives of many young people.

Sandy epitomises the essence of the “Outstanding Contribution to Young People Award.” This award acknowledges individuals who often go unnoticed but play an integral role in supporting young people’s well-being and the youth sector. Sandy’s contribution to young people in the ACT is truly exceptional.

Teen Clinic’s drop-in, and confidential approach breaks down barriers that can deter young people from seeking healthcare. Sandy’s role as a nurse, coupled with her empathetic and non-judgmental approach, has created an environment where young people feel heard and valued.

From addressing mental health concerns to providing contraception and screening for STIs, Sandy has improved the lives of countless young people. Young people will often introduce a friend to Teen Clinic saying “come and see Sandy, she can help you”. Indeed, young people often provide glowing feedback about Sandy and Teen Clinic.

Sandy recognises the importance of collaboration with local professionals, funders, and schools, creating a strong support network. Her dedication, innovation, and unwavering commitment to the well-being of young people embodies the essence of the award’s criteria, and her impact on young lives in the ACT is immense.
