Joel is the Team Leader of Youth Services at Woden Community Service, overseeing Youth Engagement team and Raw Potential. He is the first point of contact for young people, stakeholders and the wider community, accessing programs, group activities or individual case work. Joel is a very welcoming personality in every aspect of his role, an approachable point of contact for young people already engaged in programs and being very supporting of new young people accessing programs. Joel walks the journey with all young people that engage with the programs, being inclusive and adaptive in his approach ensuring all young people have the most appropriate connections to supports.
Joel is a strong advocate for young people and youth sector development, identifying new challenges for young people, then working with internal and external stakeholders to implement programs to meet the needs of all young people. This work includes training staff and delivering the new ACT Pre-Learner Driver Course, delivering open access programs for young people not connected to formal supports, engaging young people (and their families) at risk of disengaging from school or family, creating policies and procedures that support improving outcomes for young people and the youth sector.
Joel is always looking for ways to develop his own practice and leadership skill-set. Joel puts his hand up for every networking opportunity, sector development work and often takes the lead in coordinating sector wide youth events. Joel is always attending and presenting at youth worker practice networks, facilitating Joint Case Review sessions, running training for sector staff to reach a bigger cohort of young people, or coordinating youth week events like the Sunset Festival. He takes every opportunity to work with his peers, seeing the capacity to expand on his own knowledge and skill-set.
Having been in the youth sector for over 14 years, Joel has been able make contributions to the sector that can be seen now through current engagement with young people he supported over the years. Joel is often called upon when collaboration events are being planned and when strategic conversations are happening around the future of the ACT youth and community sector. Joel has also made a significant contribution as a Director on the Youth Co. Board; leading the strategic direction of the organisation, overseeing the budget and ensuring governance structures are in place. Joel was also a key contributor in the development of the ACT Youth Work Code of Ethical Practice, through his role on the advisory group, providing his professional experience, insights and passion for the youth work sector.
