The Youth Coalition farewells CEO Dr Justin Barker

Justin Barker

Youth Coalition Board Statement

The Board of the Youth Coalition of the ACT would like to announce that Dr Justin Barker, our respected Chief Executive Officer, has notified us of his decision to conclude his time with the organisation and resign from his position.

Justin will finish his role at the Youth Coalition on 16 February 2024, after which he will take some well-deserved leave before beginning his next venture.

Justin has been an invaluable part of the Youth Coalition for the past 6 years, playing the leading role in its growth, success, and impact on the lives of young people and the sector. Justin’s leadership, advocacy and passion have left a lasting mark on our community with many significant achievements during his time with the Youth Coalition. Most notability, his advocacy in establishing the Safe and Connected Youth Program and more recently his work regarding raising the minimum age of criminal responsibility in the ACT.

In speaking with Justin about his decision he said, “I have loved my time at the Youth Coalition. This role has given me the opportunity to do exciting, meaningful work with great people, to achieve positive outcomes for the community. I am very proud of what we have achieved over the last six years.”

“The impact of strategic, evidence informed, systemic advocacy can be far reaching. We have worked alongside the sector, government, and young people to promote robust, solutions focused, advocacy. I am thankful for the positive relationships we have created that have allowed us to collaborate to deliver great outcomes.”

“The Youth Coalition is such a wonderful place to work. The staff are exceptional people. It has been a privilege to work alongside them. I look forward to seeing the work they do into the future.”

“The Board is made up of great people, including champions of the youth sector. The Youth Coalition is in a strong position to continue to have a positive impact on the ACT. With a strong Board, skilled staff and excellent relationships with the sector, government and young people, the Youth Coalition is in a position to continue to go from strength-to-strength.”

“I will miss this job – it has given me so much. However, I look forward to new challenges and opportunities.”

Looking ahead, we are committed to ensuring there is minimal disruption to the operations of the Youth Coalition during this transition. An interim CEO will be appointed over the coming months to support the organisation whilst we recruit for a new CEO.

On behalf of the Youth Coalition, the sector, and all young people who have been impacted by his work, we would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to Justin for his unwavering commitment and hard work during his tenure as CEO. As we bid farewell to Justin, we wish him the very best in all his future endeavours.

We appreciate the sector’s ongoing support for the Youth Coalition of the ACT. Together, we will ensure that our organisation continues to thrive and make a positive impact on the lives of young Canberrans.

If you have any questions during this transition period, please reach out to the Youth Coalition on
