Drugs in the Family Project

The Youth Coalition of the ACT's Drugs in the Family Project is a three year project that began on July 1st 2005. The Project is funded through the Council of Australian Governments, National Illicit Drug Strategy Strengthening and Supporting Families Coping with Illicit Drug Use funding policy.

Project's Terms of Reference

Project aim:

Support the improvement of service delivery in the alcohol and other drug, family support, mental health and youth sectors to young people and families affected by alcohol and other drug use.

Project outcomes:

  • To raise the awareness of the existence of the issues experienced by and needs of young people in families affected by alcohol or other drug use.
  • To improve access to information and resources by alcohol and other drug, family support, mental health and youth sectors on the issues surrounding young people in families affected by alcohol and other drug use, and their families.
  • To enhance collaboration of services, based on improved linkages between alcohol and other drug, family support, mental health and youth sectors

Project°s target groups:

  • Primary: people working with young people and families affected by alcohol and other drug (AOD) use, including workers from alcohol and drug, family support, mental health, and youth sectors. 
  • Secondary: Young people in families affected by alcohol and other drug use, and their families.

Project outputs

The Project°s key activities include:

  • Monthly Co-Morbidity Bus Tours
  • Quarterly Training and Professional Development Calendar
  • Auspicing of the Family and Adolescent Network
  • Auspicing of the Training and Professional Development Network
  • Support for the Youth Coalition Monthly forum and seminar
  • Participation in key weeks such as Youth Week, Drug Action Week, Reconciliation Week, Child Protection Week, and Mental Health Week.
  • Alcohol and Other Drug Services in the ACT Directory 2006
  • Information and resource development and distribution
