Policy Activities

The Youth Coalition engages in policy and advocacy work through a number of mechanisms, such as representation, consultation, and the development of responses and submissions related to youth affairs.

Representation is an important part of the Youth Coalition's work and allows us to work at a hands–on level with policy objectives. Our representation activities are facilitated though membership on a variety of boards, committees and working groups that oversee matters concerning young people.

Each year the Youth Coalition develops a Budget Submission and issues a Budget Analysis that aims to better inform the decision making of the ACT Government in the allocation of funding. These are key documents for the youth sector in identifying areas of need where resources are not sufficient and where emerging issues require a response from the ACT Government.

Budget Submission:

A compilation of the feedback from our membership, young people and of other key stakeholders in matters that concern young people and those who work with them. We engage in an extensive consultation period and also draw upon the ongoing feedback we get from members about their work with young people. These are usually submitted towards the end of the calendar year in time to be considered for the following year's budget that is delivered in early June each year.

Budget Analysis:

Following the handing down of the ACT Budget in May, the Youth Coalition develops a budget analysis that examines how beneficial the budget is for young people, the extent to which our budget submission requests where adopted and the possible implications for both young people and the youth sector for the year ahead.

The Youth Coalition also makes responses to a variety of inquiries and reviews throughout the year. These review are often initiated by government and aim to improve current legislation, policy or practice. As these changes will often impact on either young people or those who work with them, we attempt to ensure that any changes are beneficial to young people.
